Student performance in the MBA program is assessed through a comprehensive system of Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) and Semester End Examinations (SEE), each contributing 50% to the final grade for every course, culminating in a total of 100 marks per course.
CIE is an ongoing assessment of a student’s engagement and learning progress throughout the semester. Conducted by the course instructor, it incorporates a blend of academic and professional exercises, including:
The specific weightage for each component is standardized at the University level to ensure consistency.
SEE are comprehensive, University-conducted examinations held at the semester’s end, covering the entire course syllabus. The syllabus is divided into distinct modules. The question paper will feature questions from each module, with choices confined within the same module to ensure breadth of coverage. SEE is the formal University examination.
A student’s initial appearance in the SEE is counted as their First Attempt, provided they have fulfilled all academic requirements, are eligible for the examination, and have attempted at least one section of the paper.
The MBA program operates on a Credit-Based System (CBS), quantifying academic workload and achievement. Credits are earned upon successful completion of the teaching-learning process and passing both CIE and SEE for a course. The award of the MBA degree is contingent upon the student earning the total number of credits specified in the program curriculum.
Credits are assigned to various academic activities as per the University’s stipulated scheme (refer to Table 1). Specific credit values for core courses, seminars, capstone projects, internship evaluations, and viva-voce examinations are detailed in the official Scheme of Teaching and Examination for the MBA program.
Academic performance in each course is indicated by a Letter Grade, which serves as a key performance index. The grading scale is as follows: O, A+, A, B+, B, C, and F.
| Theory/Lectures (L) (hours/week/Semester) | Tutorials (T) (hours/week/Semester) | Laboratory/Practical (P) (hours/week/Semester) | Credits (L:T:P) | Total Credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 0 | 0 | 4:0:0 | 4 |
| 3 | 0 | 0 | 3:0:0 | 3 |
| 2 | 2 | 0 | 2:2:0 | 3 |
| 2 | 0 | 2 | 2:0:2 | 3 |
| 2 | 2 | 2 | 2:2:2 | 4 |
| 0 | 0 | 2 | 0:0:1 | 1 |
The Letter Grade represents a qualitative assessment of a student’s performance in a course, determined by the total percentage of marks secured from both the Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) and the Semester End Examination (SEE). The MBA program employs an Absolute Grading System.
The Grade Point is the quantitative equivalent of each letter grade, measured on a 10-point scale. This numerical value is used for calculating the Semester and Cumulative Grade Point Averages (SGPA/CGPA).
| Letter Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Performance Descriptor |
|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | Very Good |
| B+ | 7 | Good |
| B | 6 | Average |
| C | 5 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Fail |
To successfully pass any course in the MBA curriculum, a student must earn a minimum Grade Point (GP) of 5.0, which corresponds to the letter grade ‘C’ (Pass). Failure to achieve this minimum in either the Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) or the Semester End Examination (SEE) will result in a failing grade (‘F’) for the course.
Credit Points quantify the quality of performance in relation to a course’s credit weight. They are calculated as the product of the Grade Point (GP) earned in a course and the number of Credits assigned to that course.
Formula: Credit Points (CP) = Grade Point (GP) × Course Credits
The SGPA is a key indicator of a student’s academic performance within a single semester. It is calculated by dividing the total Credit Points earned in all courses during that semester by the total number of Credits attempted in that same semester.
Formula: SGPA = Total Credit Points Earned in a Semester / Total Credits Attempted in that Semester
The SGPA provides a snapshot of semester-specific academic standing.
The CGPA represents the student’s overall academic performance across all completed semesters in the MBA program. It is the ratio of the cumulative total of Credit Points earned in all courses to the cumulative total of Credits attempted in the program. The CGPA is expressed up to two decimal places and is a critical metric for degree classification and honors.
Formula: CGPA = Cumulative Total of Credit Points Earned / Cumulative Total of Credits Attempted
The CGPA is the definitive measure of cumulative academic achievement.
A Grade Card is the official academic transcript issued by the University at the conclusion of each semester. It provides a comprehensive record of the student’s performance and includes:
